Luminance Contrast Testing – FAQs

Q1: What is luminance contrast testing?

Luminance contrast testing measures the difference in light reflectance (LRV) between two adjacent surfaces, such as stair nosings and treads, or tactile indicators and surrounding floor surfaces. This ensures compliance with AS 1428.1 and AS/NZS 1428.4.1, helping people with vision impairment identify hazards and navigate safely.

Q2: Why is luminance contrast testing required in NSW?

Under the Building Code of Australia (BCA) and the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), luminance contrast testing is required for surfaces such as tactile ground surface indicators (TGSIs), stair nosings, ramps, and doorway thresholds. Compliance ensures the installation meets accessibility standards and passes final certification.

Q3: What is the minimum luminance contrast for tactile indicators and stair nosings?

According to AS 1428.1, the required luminance contrast is:

  • ≥30% for integrated designs

  • ≥45% for discrete designs

  • ≥60% for composite designs
These levels must be verified using compliant measurement methods with a tristimulus colorimeter.

Q4: Do you offer on-site and laboratory luminance contrast testing?

Yes. We provide on-site testing (wet and dry) across NSW, using AS-compliant d/0 geometry tristimulus colorimeters, and sample lab testing for materials supplied before installation. Both options include a full compliance report with LRV values and contrast percentage.

Q5: How long does it take to receive a luminance contrast test report?

We deliver reports within 24–48 hours of completing testing. Urgent testing and same-day reporting are available on request for tight construction schedules.

Q6: Do you test in wet conditions?

Yes. Wet condition testing is critical for external surfaces to replicate real-world conditions. We use equipment that can accurately measure LRV on both dry and damp surfaces for a true compliance result.

Q7: What equipment do you use for luminance contrast testing?

We use compliant d/0 geometry tristimulus colorimeters (such as the Konica Minolta CR-410) in line with AS 1428.1 Appendix B and AS/NZS 1428.4.1 Appendix E requirements.

Q8: Which areas in NSW do you service?

We provide mobile testing services across Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong, and regional NSW. Travel is arranged to suit project timelines for builders, tactile installers, and certifiers.

Q9: How do I book a luminance contrast test?

You can call us, email your request, or complete the online booking form. We’ll confirm the date, location, and type of testing (on-site or sample lab) and provide a quote before commencing.

Q10: Can I combine luminance contrast testing with slip resistance testing?

Yes. As part of the Sliptest Australia Group, we can combine services to save time and cost, delivering both slip resistance and luminance contrast compliance reports in a single visit.

Q11: What does LRV mean in luminance contrast testing?

LRV stands for Light Reflectance Value. It measures the percentage of light a surface reflects on a scale of 0% (black) to 100% (white). In luminance contrast testing, LRV is used to calculate the contrast percentage between two surfaces to meet AS 1428 accessibility requirements.
